(Photo by Art Petrosemolo) A college senior sailing with two high school seniors surprised a field of 10 experienced crews to win the Metropolitan District Lightning Championship June 21-22 at the Monmouth Boat Club in Red Bank, N.J.
Rochester Institute of Technology senior Justin Copeland – out of the Nyack Boat Club, Nyack, NY., sailing with Ellie Turk and Fiona Gordon, had a combined score of 16, in six races to win the regatta by five points over Jon Schwartz, Lincroft, N.J. Copeland and crew finished with a fifth and three seconds on Saturday in light and variable breezes from the South/Southwest on the Navesink River. On Sunday, in fresh Southerlies creating a small chop and ideal conditions, the Copeland boat had a first and a fourth place finish moving from second in the field to first to secure the championship.
