Arrival of "The Great Loop" Paddlers (1200-1700)

20th June 2023, 12:00pm - 5:00pm

The Nyack Boat Club will provide a landing and overnight camping spot for a group of 10 Native canoe paddlers (Haudenosaunee in the lead) that have embarked on a very long and difficult canoe journey along the route called The Great Loop. The group will be accompanied by a small power boat with 2 crew from National Geographic that will be at one of the finger docks overnight.

Their journey started in Maine three weeks ago, and the paddlers are now on Long Island Sound. After heading up the Hudson River to the Erie Canal and Lake Erie, they will follow waters of the St. Lawrence Seaway to arrive at their starting point in Maine. Travelling along this water pathway, the paddlers hope to instill an indigenous awareness of water and land protection to communities along the waterways. Their documented journey will provide the basis for a book to be called The Canoe Story, to be published by National Geographic Books in 2025.

Their visit was originally scheduled for June 16 but has been rescheduled due to voyage conditions.
