Activities
Our beautiful clubhouse hosts numerous events throughout the year, even when the river is ice bound and our boats sit on the hard. Of course the summer is our most active time of year, when we hold racing sessions twice a week, and when our decks and balconies tend to be well occupied by members enjoying the magnificent view of the river, the great company, good food and drink available. When not in use for a club event, the clubhouse is available to members for private events. Many club events are open to the public, such as our adult sailing days, our adaptive sailing days and various training and educational sessions.
Learn to sail at the Nyack Boat Club
- Junior Sailing: NBC operates the largest Junior Sailing program on the Hudson River. The program offers two 4-week sessions from June through August, ages 8 to 16. The club maintains fleets of Optimist dinghies and Club 420s. The program offers on- and off-the-water training. The program is open to general members and seasonal members.
- Ideal 18 Sailing: using our Club-owned fleet of boats, adults enjoy a season-long program of instruction (beginner to advanced), racing, casual sailing, fleet social activities, and your private use of the boats for sailing with your guest or fellow program members.
- Sunset Sailing: On Thursday evenings in June and July join member skippers on their own boats for sailing instruction and socializing afterwards at the Nyack Boat Club Pub & Galley. A Sunset Sailing Seasonal membership is available to introduce you to the Club.
Cruising and Day Sailing
NBC is home to nearly 100 cruising boats ranging from 20 to 50 feet. The Cruising Fleet organizes several weekend cruises on the Hudson throughout the season. Many NBC Cruising Fleet members join together for Cruises to Long Island Sound, Block Island and beyond.
The Tappan Zee between the Mario Cuomo Bridge and Hook Mountain is a great sailing venue and the club is ideally situated to get you out on the water in no time. Our launch runs 7 days a week during the season and the sailing area begins right outside our mooring field. This makes it simple to jump on the boat for an hour or for a day cruise up to Nyack Beach or Croton Point.
Social life at Nyack Boat Club
Through the sailing season and the year Nyack Boat Club hosts many parties and social events. The club sponsors activities including: Superbowl Sunday, St. Patrick's Day, Opening Day, 4th of July BBQ with live music, a Pier Party with dock-tails, Closing Day, Halloween Parade float and party and New Year's Eve. In addition fleets hold many BBQs and social events throughout the year.
Dining at the Club
While the Nyack Boat Club typically operates a private restaurant, for several reasons the club will be transitioning to a "bring your own" food and drink service for the 2022 season. Members can bring their own food, schedule deliveries from local restaurants, or work with catering facilities and continue to enjoy dining and socializing on our patio. The club is looking into offering bar service a few days a week, more info to come. The main patio and picnic area with grills remain open for use by members during the season.
Sailboat racing is at the core of the Nyack Boat Club. NBC is home of six one-design fleets--ranging from centerboard dinghies to keel boats--and a mixed-class PHRF fleet. Racing requires crew and skippers are always looking for experienced sailors and enthusiastic beginners.
Crewing opportunities abound with more than 100 days of racing a year.
Sunday Racing
From May through October on Sunday afternoon the club is a hive of activity as one-design boats leave the drysail area and the launch shuttles members and crew out to their boats. Multiple races are run through the afternoon and after racing everyone gathers on the patio for refresshments, food and to discuss the day's results.
Wednesday Night Racing
From May through August members take a mid-week break and hit the water on Wednesday evenings to race around the buoys. While Wednesday nights are popular with the bigger PHRF boats, the Ideal 18s and other one-designs come out for shorter windward/leeward races. After the race some boats choose to stay out to enjoy a sunset sail while others head back for dinner on the patio.
Regattas
Nyack Boat Club hosts a dozen or more 1-2 day regattas eachs year. The club hosts three regattas, spring, summer and fall. The other regattas are hosted by fleets and attract boats and sailors from the Hudson Valley and beyond. Nyack has been host to many regional and national one-design championship regattas.
