Mooring Grid Design

1021015 orig

There were many changes implemented in the 2013 mooring field design. Due to the increase in chain scope it was necessary to increase the inter-mooring distance. The club also decided to change to geo positioning for locating moorings. Given these requirements the mooring committee decided to use a triangular pattern in order to maximize the inter-mooring distance while maintaining the number of positions along a North-South row.

The field is now oriented with lettered rows aligning to 0 degrees true North, and numbered columns aligning to 90 degrees off true North. Starting with row B, moorings are arranged in equilateral triangles where both sides of the fairway are defined by the bases of the triangles. There is 134 feet between mooring positions, as the sides of the equilateral triangles are 134 feet. The exception to this is row A which is a straight line (except for A16 which is farther East than the rest of row A). In keeping with past years, and to avoid added confusion, all location labels have remained consistent. If you were B11, you are still at B11, but what we call a lettered row actually zig zags East and West. Numbered columns remain straight lines. Within the triangular arrangement, for any given row, moorings in even numbered columns are 67 feet further East than moorings in odd numbered columns (67 = 134/2). Notice that though the distance between moorings is 134 feet, the distance between columns is about 116 feet (134 x sin(60), the height of an equilateral triangle with a base of 134).
