Open Fleet
The Mission of the Open Fleet is three-fold:
- To help members get started racing sailboats.
- To allow members to race any boat they own.
- To be a launch pad for new One Design fleets.
For the uninitiated sailboat racing can be very intimidating and it can be difficult to know where to start. The Open Fleet is a great place to get started by attending an Introduction to Racing Chalk Talk and then getting on the water coaching from experienced Open Fleet members.
The Open Fleet participates in NBC's Sunday afternoon racing and uses the Portsmouth Yardstick to handicap participating boats. Trophies are awarded to the Spring, Summer, and Fall Series Champions and to the overall Season Champions. In addition, a trophy is awarded to the sailor with the best record for participation for the season. Open Fleet members also participate in the less formal Wednesday night racing.
Every Fleet at NBC started with one boat and until there are 6 or more boats in the fleet it is not feasible to establish an independent fleet. The Open Fleet provides a growing fleet the competition and infrastructure to race on a consistent basis until the fleet is large enough to form a new fleet. We currently have a growing Colgate 26 fleet racing with the Open Fleet (4 boats and counting).
Any NBC Member can join the Open Fleet and membership is required to participate in Open Fleet racing and events. Membership dues are only $5.
