Since 1969, our Junior Sailing Program has trained generations of young people to sail. The program emphasizes not only nautical skills, but equally important lessons in safety, responsibility, and personal achievement, instilling values that extend far beyond sailing.
All our instructors are USSA-certified and follow strict safety guidelines developed by the club's board, the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound, the U.S. Sailing Association, and the U.S. Optimist Dinghy Association. Instructors are certified in CPR and First Aid and hold NY State powerboat operator licenses.
Utilizing Optimists and C420s, we run two four-week summer sessions in July and August. All programs stress learning, fun, and safety, and students are on the water as much as possible. Students start out in our dock-protected harbor until they're ready to adventure farther out into the Hudson River. Time on shore is spent learning about seamanship, nautical nomenclature, rules of the sea, boat maintenance, weather, and navigation. Young sailors build self-confidence by mastering the sport of sailing and sailing their own boats.
All are welcome to our Jr. Sailing program. If you are not already a club member, a parent can simply enroll in our Jr. Sailing Seasonal Membership for their children to participate. In addition to being in the program, every member of the Nyack Boat Club, whether Regular or Seasonal, enjoys these benefits throughout the entire season:
· Access to the Club—including the Pub and Galley
· Invitations to all social functions
· Use of Club-owned kayaks
· Access to private sailing lessons for the parent at an additional fee
· Volunteer opportunities with other members on Club events and special projects
